Defensible Space

In Jason Montano’s current photographic project, Defensible Space, we are presented with land, a home, sense of self, and the threat of fire. In its most concrete form, the work is about protecting a home from its possible destruction at the hands of wildfire. Surrounding vegetation is gathered and burned to keep a low–fuel perimeter around a family home in the Sierra Foothills of Northern California. However, the work also seeks to abstract deeper themes of human condition by providing metaphorical relationships to space, time and identity.
